1. Penjelasan “Past Progressive Tense”
Past progressive tense atau yang lebih sering dikenal dengan nama past continuous tense adalah indicates continuing action, something that was happening, going on, at some point in the past. Maksudnya Past progressive tense atau past continuous tense menawarkan acara yang berkelanjutan, sesuatu yang sedang terjadi dimasa lampau, sedang terjadi, atau hal-hal yang terjadi diwaktu tertentu dimasa lalu, atau acara tersebut telah dimulai tapi belum selesai pada ketika itu.
2. Rumus “Past Progressive Tense”
Keterangan waktu ini dibuat dengan kata bantu kata kerja to be dalam bentuk lampau yaitu was dan were, ditambah dengan present progressive atau continuous yang diikuti dengan -ing di selesai kata. Berikut ini yaitu rumus-rumusnya Dalam beberapa jenis kalimat.
- Kalimat aktual : S + be (was/were) + present continuous (v-ing)
Contoh :
Dessy was traveling (Dessy sedang berlibur)
The workers were queuing (Para pekerja sedang mengantri)
- Kalimat negatif : S + be (was/were) + not + present continuous (v-ing)
Contoh :
Dessy was not traveling (Dessy tidak sedang berlibur)
The workers were not queuing (Para pekerja tidak sedang mengantri)
- Kalimat tanya : be (was/were) + S + present continuous (v-ing)?
Contoh :
Was Dessy traveling (Apakah Dessy sedang berlibur?)
Were the workers queuing? (Apakah para pekerja sedang mengantri?)

3. Fungsi “Past Progressive Tense”
Beberapa fungsi past progressive tense atau past continuous tense antara lain :
- Past progressive tense atau past continuous tense dipakai untuk mengindikasikan suatu acara yang terjadi ketika waktu tertentu di masa lampau.
Contoh : I was shopping at this time yesterday. (Saya sedang belanja pada jam ini kemarin).
They were roasting corn at this time last night. (Mereka sedang memperabukan jagung pada jam ini kemarin malam).
- Past progressive tense atau past continuous tense dipakai untuk menawarkan bahwa ada acara berdurasi pendek (simple past tense) yang terjadi ketika suatu acara berdurasi panjang (past continuous tense) sedang berlangsung. Subordinate conjunction “when” atau “while” dapat digunakan.
Contoh : She was sleeping when you called her. (Dia sedang tidur ketika kau meneleponnya).
The door was knocked while I was studying. (Pintu diketuk ketika aku sedang belajar).
- Past progressive tense atau past continuous tense dipakai untuk mengolok-olok atau mengkritik acara yang terjadi pada interval acak namun sebetulnya merupakan kebiasaan alami.
Contoh : The girl was always yelling out loud. (Anak itu selalu menjerit keras-keras).
My neighbor was always chasing stray cats off with his broom. (Tetangga aku selalu mengusir kucing-kucing liar dengan sapunya).
